The Shanware Pottery Symbol

The symbol Shan, stamped on all Shanware Pottery, means mountain in Chinese. This symbol expresses the character, strength, and durability of our work; work inspired by traditional stoneware and porcelain of ancient China and Japan.

"When I began the study of pottery in college, our first assignment was to design a "chop mark" or stamp with which to sign our work. Pottery made in the tradition of classical oriental pottery demanded an oriental signature and "shan" was one of the few charachters I knew at the time. But it also seemd to me to represent the spirit of the clay, made from the mountain after eons of geologic time. " Richard Wetterer
